Drink Review: African Starr Mojito

Rating

Not As Bad As Some Mojitos

Sights: Like a drink with a bunch of crap floating in it. Also a bit more golden than your average mojito due to the tangerine liqueur.

Smells: You’ll be utterly shocked to discover that it smells like mint and lime.

Tastes: If you like a mojito, the African Starr could be to your liking. The main difference here (and Rickey applauds the bar for ingenuity) is the addition of the Van der Hum, which is a tangerine liqueur from South Africa. Alone, the Van der Hum is mellow and sweet with a slightly spice forward aftertaste. In the cocktail the nuances get a bit lost, with it offering just a smidge of citrus and lots of sweetness. That said, the lime juice offsets the sweet a bit, so you aren’t just getting a snootful of sugar.

Feels: Crispy and refreshing with the occasional mint leaf interloper. Just check your teeth after you’re finished. No one likes a swamp mouth.

Rick’s Tricks: Because they free pour at the bar, you have the power to tailor the bevs to your liking. Rickey asked for less sugar and it was still a bit too sweet for his ratchety, boozehound sensibilities.

Overall: It’s decent, but not exactly a starr.
