Drink Review: S.S. Politician

Rating

Your Whiskey Ship Has Finally Come In

Sights: It looks like a Manhattan. And it basically is a Manhattan, so great work!

Smells: Whiskey burns the nose hairs, making way for a delectable cherry aroma.

Tastes: Like Rickey on an all night bender, this cocktail evolves from sweet to dry to bitter. It uses the basic building blocks of a classic Manhattan, but changes things up a bit with cherry bitters and Italian amaro (as opposed to angostura and sweet vermouth). The Montenegro provides botanical notes which are perfectly counterbalanced by the cherry. And the whiskey dries out the cocktail leaving you with a nice, spicy finish.

Feels: Medium bodied and smooth, just like your classic Manhattan.

Rick’s Tricks: The main reason this cocktail doesn’t get higher marks is that it’s not terribly original. But if you are looking for something less sweet than many of the other original cocktails on The BOATHOUSE menu, and you like whiskey and bitters, you can’t go wrong with the S.S. Politician.

Overall: If Rickey were a pirate, he’d definitely plunder this whiskey ship. It’s not going to rock any boats to be sure. But if you like a classic Manhattan, it’ll probably float yours
