Drink Review: Corn Old Fashioned

Rating

Get It If You Like Booze and Happiness

Sights: Hefty glass, big ice, simple cherry garnish and smiles all around.

Smells: An olfactory extravaganza! The rye and cardamom add some rich, spicy notes. But the finish is tequila softened with a light fruitiness from the maraschino cherries. This is a rare gem in the land of frozen drinks.

Tastes: Rickey has been likened to a neanderthal before. However unlike early man, he knows about evolution (but only in cocktail form). The Corn Old Fashioned starts a bit fruity and sweet, then dries out mid-palate from the tequila. The finish is long and spicy because of the rye. It’s so good that Rickey has been known to over-imbibe, resulting in a decidedly less evolved version of himself. You might say it turns him into a La Cava man.

Feels: This drink is the perfect temperature and has a lovely, velvety mouthfeel. And has Rickey mentioned how much he loves good ice? Halle-fuckin-lujah.

Rick’s Tricks: The Corn Old Fashioned will knock you on your ass (which is where Rickey generally prefers to be anyway). However, emerging, bleary eyed, into the daylight from the Mexico Pavilion can be a bit of a shock to the system.

For this reason, Rickey likes to take a ride on Three Caballeros to level out after a few of these suckers. It’s one of Rickey’s favorite attractions at Disney, but that could have something to do with the order of operations.

Overall: Rickey’s snobbiest friends love this cocktail. Rickey’s mom ALSO loves this cocktail, but her second favorite drink is plastic-bottle gin and off-brand diet tonic. In other words, this one runs the gamut. However, it will only please those who really like a dry, booze forward drink.

  1. Every time I went to Epcot as a kid I always wondered what this tiny alcove was. Now that I’m a liquor drinking adult I think I seriously need to put this place on the map when I go this August. Thanks for the review Rickey!

  2. This is my favorite drink and La Cava del Tequila is not only Rickey’s all time favorite bar but MINE too! He always takes me there every trip and says that I am much easier to deal with after a few of these Old Fashions! LOL – Love you Rickey, Mom
