Drink Review: Vanilla Bean Manhattan

Rating

Bean Me Up, Scotty!

Sights: Have you ever seen a Manhattan with an orange peel instead of a cherry? Well now you have!

Smells: Vanilla-y bourbon notes with orange to round it out.

Tastes: When Rickey drunkenly wrote his tasting notes for this one he could not stop himself from repeatedly using the adjective “soft”. Maybe this is a good descriptor of one of his organs after drinking too many of these babies… We’re talking about his heart, of course (He’s a sad-sack drunk on occasion).

Anyway, the whiskey is soft at first, followed by vanilla with a slightly muted bitter, finishing with more vanilla which is, you guessed it! Soft. This cocktail evolves like a GD Bryan Adams song, through various iterations of soft. Also it’s delicious. Just like our fave “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” soundtrack artist.

Feels: Medium bodied. Just what you’d expect.

Rick’s Tricks: When you peruse the Flying Fish menu online, they fail to mention their cocktail heavy hitters. Do not despair! They will provide you with a paper menu upon arrival, which offers many more options, including this one.

Overall: It’s one of the best Manhattans on property. This must be due to the combo of Averna, a bitter Italian amaro, and the sweeter vanilla notes. The drink isn’t super far off from your classic Manhattan. But because the bitterness comes entirely from the Averna (and not Angostura), it’s, well, softer. In any event, it’s somehow both complex and perfectly blended to create an interesting yet highly drinkable Manhattan riff.
