It Had Rickey At 69
Sights: Can anyone guess why Rickey might love this garnish so very much? Hint: He is not particularly enamored with the year…
Also the ice is a big, clear cube, which looks very cool on top of The Edison coaster
Smells: The nose is a bit of a trickster- all orange and honey, with very little smoke. Initially you might expect this to be light on the mezcal but…
Tastes: The sweet and citrusy nose actually leads nicely into an interesting flavor profile. It starts with rye but quickly evolves into a smoky, mezcal heavy palate. Often times poorly made Old Fashioned riffs just kind of end there, with that burning sensation lingering on the tongue and in the back of your throat. This is especially true with anything mezcal related. However, this cocktail finishes with orange and honey, which leaves one feeling delighted rather than assaulted by booze.
Feels: The honey makes this cocktail slightly full bodied and syrupy.
Rick’s Tricks: This drink is off-menu, so you must ask for the bartender Talon and his creation. Also, if you are interested in even more of his work, check out Talon’s Craft Cocktails on Facebook!
Overall: This is one of those cocktails that Rickey loves, but that will only suit certain, specific palates. If you are into a mezcal Old Fashioned and you like the idea of an orange and honey flair, definitely go for it.
